I’m really glad you’re paying attention to this — scalp bumps on a child can be painful, and it’s stressful when the appointment feels far away 💛
I can’t diagnose without seeing them, but I can help you figure out what to do right now and when to escalate.
🚨 First: when to seek care sooner (don’t wait)
Go to urgent care / call your doctor sooner if ANY of these are true:
- Fever
- Rapidly spreading redness or swelling
- Pus, oozing, or crusting
- Hair falling out in patches around the bumps
- Severe pain or tenderness
- Swollen lymph nodes behind ears or neck
- Your son seems lethargic or unwell
Those can signal infection.
Common possibilities (not a diagnosis)
Painful scalp bumps in kids are often one of these:
- Folliculitis (infected hair follicles)
- Impetigo (bacterial skin infection)
- Tinea capitis (fungal scalp infection — very common in kids)
- Inflamed cysts
- Reaction to scratching, lice treatment, or tight hairstyles
Some of these need prescription treatment, especially fungal infections — home remedies won’t clear them.
What you can safely do right now
Until you’re seen:
✅ Do
- Wash scalp gently with mild shampoo (no harsh scrubbing)
- Keep the area clean and dry
- Use warm compresses 10–15 min, 2–3× daily (if painful)
- Keep fingernails short to prevent scratching
- Change pillowcases daily
- Don’t share hats, brushes, or towels
❌ Don’t
- Don’t squeeze or pop bumps
- Don’t apply essential oils, vinegar, or home “cures”
- Don’t use steroid creams unless prescribed
- Don’t start antifungal or antibiotic creams unless told to
If you can’t get in soon
- Call the pediatrician and ask if they can review photos
- Ask about a same-day sick visit or cancellation list
- Urgent care is reasonable if pain or infection signs worsen
If you want, you can:
- Upload a photo (I can help you think through what it might resemble and what questions to ask the doctor)
- Tell me:
- His age
- How long they’ve been there
- Whether there’s itching, hair loss, or drainage
You’re doing the right thing by not ignoring this — let’s make sure he gets comfortable and safe while you wait 🤍
